Day 14

Hello and welcome to the Skinny Bitch Lifestyle.

Today on Oprah, she discussed on her show, how to change the way we think about the food we eat. If you didn’t see the show, stay tuned till tomorrow…I took really good notes and will share them with you.
Sneak Peak: Oprah recommends seeing the documentary “Food, Inc.” I just ordered the movie through Netflix tonight. Also, actress/vegan Alicia  Silverstone was on Oprah, as well, talking about her new book “The Kind Diet” and there are some really good vegan recipes in it I will try once I purchase the book.

Today, while watching Oprah, I was standing in the living room for a portion of the show. Hayden, my younger son, walked up behind me and then wrapped his arms around my waist. (Please Note: I realize I talk about my younger son more than my older son, Connor, but he is in 5th grade and has a whole lot of homework, plays sports, etc…he is a busy guy. Hayden hangs out with me more because he has fewer demands on him at this stage of his life). Anyway, while Hayden was standing behind me with his arms wrapped around me, I thought he was simply giving me a hug. Instead, he was trying to pick me up. He did manage to get me air born about one inch off the ground, and then he dropped me down quickly, followed by a huge release of air, whooshing out his mouth. “Hayden──what are you doing?” I asked. “Just weighing you.” He said. “That’s nice, but we have a scale I can use to weigh myself.” I replied and Hayden said. “I know, but dad says that scale isn’t accurate.” “Oh──well how much do you think I weigh?” Hayden didn’t even have to think long before he answered. “I don’t know but it’s a lot.”

Fact: Today I was asked some questions, by some moms at school, who are reading my blog:

Q: Am I sick of Oatmeal and Malt-O-Meal yet?
A: Not yet, but that is why I bounce back and forth between the two for breakfast, and adding fruit helps too. The other reason I like these two items for breakfast is because they are very filling and can carry me till lunch.

Q: How much weight have I lost?
A: 8 pounds so far, but I am starting to believe we need a new scale since there is some uncertainty pertaining to the accuracy of our current scale. Also, I don’t weigh myself every day, just once a week.

Q: How did it go on that “time of the month” for me?
A: It went really well, in fact, better than expected. Usually I crave chocolate (because chocolate has iron) like a lot of women do. The cravings did not happen this time, maybe because I am already eating foods rich in iron.

Q: Where am I shopping at and where am I getting my lists of vegan foods to shop for?
A: Whole Foods, Mothers Market and Trader Joe’s are where my husband and I shop at. Most foods are labeled “vegan” on the packaging to help make it easier. Also, I am following the detailed food lists in the Skinny Bitch book labeled; Breakfast Food List, Lunch Food List, Dinner Food List, Acceptable Junk food, Snacks & Desserts and Condiments Baking Supplies & Miscellaneous. The Skinny Bitch in the Kitch book has recipes, so this book and the Skinny Bitch book go with us shopping.

Q: Has it been more expensive to eat vegan? And has it been difficult to make two different meals at dinner?
A: It’s not been that difficult. In fact, my husband is flirting, ever so slightly with the vegan concept and we have been eating somewhat similar meals. For example, last Saturday night my husband made roasted Tofurky Italian sausage with peppers, onions, and garlic over soft polenta. My husband and I ate that and my older son (Connor) tried it and liked it too; Connor now eats oatmeal for breakfast instead of cereals high in sugar. I hope gradually, as a family, we will eventually move in the same direction and find a happy medium, and eat the same meals together again. However, I won’t force a vegan diet on my kids.  Also, my husband and I stopped buying Starbucks coffee with a scone. Eating fast food isn’t something I do anymore and my husband isn’t eating out at lunch any more either, and instead he is taking his lunch to work. But, like any change it is a transition and hopefully a healthier one for the entire family, not just for me.

Another day towards a fit and fab life!!!
