Day 15

Hello and welcome to the Skinny Bitch Lifestyle.

Michael Pollan, food expert and author, was on Oprah yesterday discussing food and what people should know. Michael explained we should avoid foods, with ingredients, a third grader can’t even pronounce. Also, he encouraged people to eat foods that will eventually rot, because some processed foods can last up to two years, but that doesn’t mean you should eat it. Michael said the “low fat” kick that has been so popular in the past, indeed up making people fatter. The reason being was, in order for a portion of the “fat” to be removed, more sugar was added. Michael Pollan went on to discuss the raising of beef animals on farms and said, beef that has been grass fed, opposed to corn fed is healthier to consume. Because beef animals were designed by nature to eat grass, not corn and they will eventually get sick from being corn fed. So, why would you want to eat beef from a sick/diseased animal? Michael’s recommendation is if you do eat beef, eat beef that has in fact eaten well itself. ***More information on this topic tomorrow.***

One major improvement I have noticed in myself in the last two weeks is I am not nibbling off my kids plates any longer. It became such a habit to eat leftovers my boys didn’t finish. There were a few times in the last two weeks I would grab a chicken nugget, and just before it grazed my lips I would remember──oh──that’s right I’m a vegan. In fact, the other day I was clearing up the dinner dishes and I spotted a yummy looking un-eaten mozzarella stick on one of the plates. Mozzarella sticks were a favorite of mine when I was pregnant. Anyway, I stared down that fat, greasy, cheesy, strip of calories and blurted out proudly, “I’m a vegan.” Just then my 11 year old son, Connor, walked past and asked, “what’s a virgin?”

Fact: Americans take three million pounds of antibiotics every year. How many pounds are given to livestock each year?  28 million

Why: One reason is the chicken has been revolutionized because the public prefers white meat. So, along with breading, diet, and antibiotics, chickens have been re-engineered so they are bigger chickens, with bigger breasts, which equals more white meat. One chicken farmer was interviewed explaining that, chickens can grow faster on antibiotics. That’s right; chicken can mature in 49 days on antibiotics, as opposed to the traditionally slow, natural, method of 3 months. Now farmers can make more money and deliver chicken faster to the public. (The Oprah Winfrey Show, Food, Inc. Michael Pollan)

Another day towards a fit and fab life!!!
